Lemony Snicket’s A Series Of Unfortunate Events Magic 8 Ball

Official Magic 8 Ball Name: Lemony Snicket’s A Series Of Unfortunate Events Magic 8 Ball

Release Date: October  2004

Brand: Mattel

Stock Number: B4831

On September 30, 1999 Harper Collins published both A Series of Unfortunate Events, Book The First: The Bad Beginning, and A Series of Unfortunate Events, Book the Second: The Reptile Room, kicking off a seven-year literary journey for much of America’s youth.  The Lemony Snicket “hysteria” reached its fever peak in the fall of 2004 heading into the December release of the first (and, we now know, only) Lemony Snicket film: Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events.

Not one to miss a marketing trend, Mattel released a board game (“The Perilous Parlor Game” is for 2-4 players, ages 8 and up), a card game (“The Catastrophic Card Game” is for 2 – 4 Players, Ages 14 and under), and the item of most interest to us: a Magic 8 Ball.

I’m not really sure why Mattel chose the gold-tone for this ball, but my best guess is that they were attempting to mirror the sepia-themed imagery in the books and movie.  I’m also not sure what, exactly, is on the answer window, but consensus around here is that it’s an eye.  Perhaps an actual reading of the books would provide more insight.  If you have any, please leave a comment below.

The Lemony Snicket’s Magic 8 Ball does, however, hold my all-time favorite answer: “Concentrate and Go Away”.  And speaking of the Lemony Snicket Magic 8 Ball Answers, here they are in their entirety:

  • As I See It Grim
  • Calamity Confirmed
  • Circumstances Unfavorable
  • Concentrate and Go Away
  • Depressingly True
  • Devastation Assured
  • Don’t Ask Again
  • Future Glum
  • Happiness Unlikely
  • Miserably Correct
  • Misfortune Imminent
  • My Reply Is Gloomy
  • My Sources Say Tragedy
  • Outlook Wretched
  • Reply Dismal Try Again
  • Ruin Is Certain
  • Signs Point to Bleak
  • Sorrowfully Yes
  • Tragically So
  • Unfortunately Yes

Note: Although the box has both English and French text, and there’s even an indication that this is the “English Version”, I’ve never seen a French version. if you have any details on such a critter, please leave a comment below.
