Although the Magic 8 Ball has been around since 1946, I only came to discover its magical prognosticative powers around 1975. I believe it was somewhere around the age of 6 that I first discovered an over sized 8 ball on my father’s shelf and discovered that life was not random at all. In fact, the future was not only set, but predictable! And my father, not surprisingly, had the key to all future knowledge. Aren’t dads awesome?
In the 30 plus years since that early discovery many Magic 8 Balls have come and gone from my hands. I have asked literally thousands of questions and always received an answer of some sort. What more can one ask from an object widely perceived to be a kid’s toy?
I’ve even sold several hundred Magic 8 Balls, of numerous different designs, during my years working in various game stores. In fact it was while working in my last games gig, Christmas 2005, that I got the idea for a Magic 8 Ball Encyclopedia. Just like the Magic 8 Balls I’ve owned, this idea drifted in and out of my life for several years.
About a month ago the idea came back once again and I began searching the web for a complete list of extant Magic 8 Balls and the answers that they provide. There are a few lists that claim to be complete, but comparing them makes it clear that none of them are. Thus, Magic8Balls.net was born. We will never make a claim of completeness as we know that no such thing is possible. However, our plan is to become the most complete archive of Magic 8 Ball information, history, and digital ephemera on the internet.
